Columbia Explorer Vest : Plenty of Pockets and Sun Protection

I'm a big fan of vests -- for trail and travel. If I'm just out for a short hike, I can carry all I need in my vest pockets. If I'm traveling, I can keep my tickets, passport, money, and medicine close to me at all times.

In the past, I've had a hard time finding the RIGHT vest. Because I'm 5'11" most women's vests don't fit me; they're too short. If I go up a size, they're still too short and then way too wide. Men's vests offer a better fit in the length, but a pretty boxy fit--I always looked like I was wearing my boyfriend's vest. So I was delighted to discover Columbia's Explorer Vest. A size L fits perfectly.

I like how they cut the shoulders in a bit, added some darts in the chest, and every so slightly pulled in the side seams (and in the back) at the waist (so subtle you can't tell by looking at it.) The result is a slim, trim vest that looks great on (and can clearly be identified as a women's garment) and provides me will all the pockets I need.

The pockets are the main reason I love this vest. They're all low profile, many are secured with zippers or velcro, and they're all flat. So, when I'm walking along, I have two side pockets where I can rest my hands. On top of one side pocket, there's a little pocket that seals with a unique little strap that loops through the pocket flap and snaps shut. All of the pockets are mesh lined, so that saves on weight.

On the chest there are two discreet zippered pockets running along the seams on either side of the main zipper. Ideal for passport, credit cards, and money. Inside the vest are two more pockets, both velcro sealed, that could hold a knife, a compass, a nutrition bar, and a cell phone.

Other features I appreciate are the double zipper and the high collar. I can cool down when I need to or zip up when it gets chilly.

The Explorer vest is part of Columbia's Titanium collection and made out of Omni Dry material, which is designed to wick away moisture and dry quickly. This fabric is provides a UPF 50 protection from the sun's UV rays.

Available in bark (dark brown) and fossil (light khaki), sizes XS-L.

Bottom Line: A superb option for women who want a sleeker vest for travel or trail. --E.D. (Sept 08)
